The study of what we see is absolutely mind blowing. It’s connection to our Wing Chun is inextricable. Most if not all of what we see is not as it appears. We see very little in terms of the full spectrum of what is visible to oh say a fly or an eagle. Things look different from various angles distances and let’s just say from different perspectives.
As a Wing Chun Kung Fu practitioner you want to see feel hear as accurate as humanly possible. Seeing beyond a persons anger hatred or bad behavior can prevent negative outcomes ie needlessly engaging physically or psychologically. Staying centered or calm allows you to respond swiftly with grace and humility. As Brian Eno says “the most challenging thing is to decide what is worthy of pursuing” I para-phrase but it is the same dilemma.
As an oil painter I have felt the emotion of bravery more than any other art. One wrong stroke could absolutely ruin what was to be a divine masterpiece. Here’s the thing. A painting (of whatever) is definitely NOT what it appears to be. Meaning it is paint manipulated on canvas that can evoke the memory or feeling of the actual thing.
I just realized what a rabbit hole of a topic I just started. So let’s just go to the Louvre in Paris and see how serious the ancients took the study of what we see . Enjoy.
